History

The past, a rich heritage

InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel has become part of the life of its city, its heritage, its region and its vineyards. What was true from the end of the 18th century, at the very beginning of its history, is still true 207 years later, with the same strength, the same commitment, the same passion and the same desire for perfection. InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel is the place for all types of meetings and emotions.

A dream, a history

Right in the heart of the golden triangle, generally known as the “quartier des Grands Hommes”, the historic hub of the city of Bordeaux, architect Victor Louis added the final touches to the construction of a mansion house. This inspired architect also designed the Opera House. A reference in the art of building! The same neoclassical-inspired façade, same Corinthian style colonnade, same excessive interior style, like the astonishing Marble Room, now called the Sauternes Salon, a marvel of marvels: the mirror effect is immediate between the Opera House and the Grand Hotel, striking, and at the same time the harmony of the whole Place de la Comédie reaches perfection. These new buildings immediately entered the hearts of the people of Bordeaux forever.

The Grand Hôtel was therefore born under the sign of Excellence.

The years and decades passed and asserted the hotel”s reputation, reinforced by legendary guests, like the Deputy… Victor Hugo who, in 1870, made this visionary statement from the neighbouring terrace of the Café de Bordeaux: “If we do not want any more wars in Europe, we must create Europe”. Visionary, did we say… Then History with a capital “H” began to slow down. As the years went by, life in the hotel lost some of its intensity and some of its splendour. But the myth lived on.

InterContinental Bordeaux - Le Grand Hotel x La Croix Rouge

From November 9th to December 9th 2018

From 9th November to 9th December, the InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel will be working hand in hand with the Red Cross, to organize a toy collection program. The idea is simple: all of our customers, whether staying at the hotel or enjoying one of the restaurants (Orangerie tearoom, Victor’s bar, Night Beach rooftop, Gordon Ramsay’s Le Bordeaux brasserie or Gordon Ramsay’s gastronomic Le Pressoir d’Argent) will be welcome to leave a toy or a game (complete and in perfect working order) at Gordon Ramsay’s Le Bordeaux brasserie. The collected toys will then be repackaged and distributed to families in need, via one of the 14 Red Cross centers in the Aquitaine region. “Every child is entitled to experience the magic of Christmas”, points out Thomas Bourdois, Managing Director of InterContinental Bordeaux – Le Grand Hotel. “We hope that a large number of our customers will enjoy participating in this project so as to improve Christmas for as many children as possible”.
